This is a classic tabletop RPG in video game form, and trying to give players the same amount of freedom they would have in a tabletop version can be a nightmare. It definitely seems like it could be a lot of fun on release. We chat with Mathieu Girard, CEO and Creative Director of Tactical Adventures about Solasta: Crown of the Magister, a D&D RPG licensed by Wizards of the Coast. It's obviously a pre-alpha demo so this could all be improved during development.
SOLASTA CROWN OF THE MAGISTER GAMEPLAY FULL
It's hard to say how good the combat will be in the full release but considering how important encounter design is in games like this it would have been nice if the demo showed off some more interesting fights. The fights in the demo didn't offer me any challenge (and this was my first experience with anything 5th edition related) and didn't require any tactical thought. It mostly just makes the areas annoying to explore. The whole "verticality" aspect seems cool, but doesn't really amount to anything in the demo.

Surprisingly, there's quite a lot of party banter, which makes this even more annoying. Most of it is just your party members dropping snide comments towards one another with bad voice acting. That said, there's a lot of things that I really didn't like: I enjoyed it and I'll probably be keeping an eye on this until it releases since it definitely seems like it could be fun. Watch out, though - the monsters are also thinking vertically.īased on the 5e ruleset of the world's most popular tabletop RPG, Solasta: Crown of the Magister brings back the thrill, tactics, and deep storytelling of tabletop games. Take advantage of the environment to find cover suited to your own size. Escape through narrow passages where bigger enemies won't fit and crawl through tunnels to find secret areas. Position yourself on high grounds to start the fight with an advantage. Push them into chasms or drop things on their heads. Evade or surprise foes from above or below. The dungeons in Solasta are more than flat game-boards. Walls and columns can be pushed over - on top of your foes, if you do it right.
